Following news that subscriber data is being provided to suspicious characters by mobile phone companies in the United States (see “CerCareOne” – February 19), the news site Motherboard has discovered that another weakness in the system has been exploited.
The original story revealed that an intermediary company can be set up that disguises the eventual recipient of personal information about subscribers. The Motherboard story shows how similar data has been gained by stalkers and other low lifes simply by impersonating police officers.
