Ambassadors from Saudi Arabia have been summoned by both the Dutch and Danish governments to hear protests about the activities of four dissident Iranian-Arabs who it is believed were spying for the kingdom. Three of these men were arrested in Denmark on 4 February, the fourth was arrested in the Netherlands on the same day. The men in Denmark had been under surveillance by the Danish Security Service (PET) for some months according to a PET briefing. They were allegedly members of the Arab Struggle for the Liberation of Ahwaz (ASMLA). ASMLA is dedicated to the overthrow of the current regime in Iran and it is therefore supported by Saudi Arabia which is Iran’s major rival in the region. They were charged with spying for Saudi Arabia between 2012 and 2018. It is also alleged that they were involved with a terrorist attack in Iran in September 2018 that killed 25 people.
